You never know what you'll end up finding if you just ask people questions. I've got boxes of old (really old) books sitting here now because I asked a lady having a yard sale if she had any old paper items or books. It turns out she not only is a librarian, her father never seemed to throw a book away. She originally had no plans to put the books out. She didn't think anyone would be interested in them.

While I watched, she carried out box after box of books from the late 1800's and early 1900's. They showed some age, but there was none of that dreaded mildew odor found so often in old books. I'm still working my way through those boxes. I know I saw one that was from somewhere around 1880 that had been signed by the author. I ended up getting about 5 big boxes of books for around $20 or $30. I don't remember exactly because I purchased some old toys from her too and she sort of added things up in her head as we went along. I made the $30 back after selling the first couple of old books. The rest is gravy. I'm listing a 1903 five volume set of Edgar Allan Poe's writings this week. I did a little research and I don't think they are first edition, but we'll see how they do. I'm starting them around $9.95. If you take a look at Books>Antiquarian & Collectible, you'll see that there are still some hard core book collectors out there who want those old, out of print books that people throw away or donate to local libraries. Study the category a little bit and then go out and get yourself some!

Oh, by the way...I'm not a total jerk. I offered to carry the boxes, but the lady had a dog just inside the front door that was bouncing off of the walls and she made me wait outside. Good luck hunting!
