Wilton cake pans are something that I pick up whenever I see them at garage sales or yard sales.  I learned that it can be hard to find specific pans a few years ago when we wanted a special character for a birthday cake.  I can't remember which one it was at this point, but it wasn't easily available anywhere near we live.  In my house, we usually only make cakes for special occasions.  I like cake just fine, but we just don't seem to make a lot of it.

Have you ever watched really special cakes being made?  I've got to admit that there are not a whole lot of television shows that I'll actually stop and watch.  I like a lot of the ones on the Food Network, but I'm not really a faithful fan of any particular show.  One of the ones I seem to end up catching a lot is the one where they have cake making challenges that must be completed within a certain time frame (8 hours?).  Some of the cakes they create are really amazing.  Especially when you consider that they sometimes hamper the pros with some totally inexperienced assistant for the duration of the challenge.

I have never done anything fancier than a layer cake myself and any attempts at decoration have been pretty pathetic.  There are some very talented amateur cake designers out there though.  Why am I writing about people making fancy cakes?  Well, frankly, it is because I have noticed that cake making products are a great item for both buying and selling on eBay.  Specifically, Wilton cake products sell like crazy.  The Wilton cake pans sell very well, but that isn't all that can be counted on to sell.  Wilton is a very trusted and respected name in the world of cake making.  I once found a box full of Wilton yearbooks at an estate sale where the original owner ran a bakery and confections shop.  I found that those sold very well in lots of at least a few per auction.  Looking through them, they seemed like a very handy resource for someone who wanted to learn more about creating special cakes.

Another thing I noticed is that when I find older Wilton pans, they are almost always in pretty good shape.  They seem to hold up well over time and through multiple uses.  For someone who makes a variety of cakes for different occasions, building up a collection of these cake pans is probably a great idea.  Considering that they usually go for pretty reasonable prices on eBay, they are an nice value for people who want to be able to offer the widest variety possible to the clients for whom they will be baking specialty cakes.  I don't find these enough at yard sales or estate sales to call them common.  I almost always do snag them when I find them though.  If you are trying to find a specific pan, especially if it is no longer being produced, you will probably have a much easier time of it if you just check out what is selling on eBay.  Usually there may be some light competition for the item, but in most cases, nothing too outrageous.

Here is a cake decorating video that I thought some people might like to check out.  I don't think and specific brand of cake pans is mentioned.
